Why are fan speed controllers a decidedly better solution for ventilation systems than motors with tappings?
- Making regulating tappings on a speed controller is easier, cheaper and simpler than making tappings in the motor winding.
- Controllers are less susceptible to changes in the working environment, to unusual conditions (e.g. in a tunnel), to the fan characteristics (e.g. a change in blade direction) and to the mains voltage level (which may vary from -10 to 10%), thanks to which the controllers last longer and operate without failure.
- Control at the motor has a distinctly smaller range (it cannot be stepless and in practice offers no more than three control steps), whereas controllers offer wide possibilities for controlling ventilation systems (steplessly, in 3 or 5 steps).
A perfect example here is the ARWT controller from Breve.
The ARWT controller with five-step control is equipped with a thermostat that maintains the set temperature, while the ARES/T controller is also equipped with a thermostat, but in addition it adjusts the fan speed itself in order to maintain the set temperature. This is a convenient and economical solution for use in both less and more advanced ventilation systems.
It is worth remembering that this is only a sample of the ARES/T controller’s capabilities. The KickStart function ensures a reliable and rapid start, 4kV isolation between the control input and the actuating circuit together with an internal power supply circuit increase operating safety, and thanks to its IP54 degree of protection the controller will perform well in (almost) any conditions.
The AREX controller, in turn, allows stepless remote control of fans by means of a 0-10V DC signal (AREX models), 0-20mA (AREX/I) or the MODBUS protocol (the AREX/A range – already available in our offer). This makes it possible to connect the controller to devices such as HMI panels, PLC controllers or PCs – undoubtedly a useful solution when designing extensive HVAC systems or when integrating with BMS systems.
Also new in the Breve offer are dual-setpoint controllers available in single- or three-phase versions. They allow the fan to be controlled, for example, differently by day and by night – one controller and five-step control in two ways – a practical solution, say what you will.
Models from the ARWE/A series are equipped with the same functions (HMI, PLC and BMS) as AREX/A, only in combination with five-step control.
What else do the ARWE/A and AREX/A models have in common? One could say that they are intelligent and “very smart”, because it is enough to set the desired temperature and they will adjust the fan speed themselves so as to maintain the required temperature in the room. What is more, their design makes it possible to combine many controllers into a single, efficiently operating system that can be controlled from one place, e.g. from a computer.
System of programmable controllers controlled by a 230V AC signal
It is also worth getting to know the other controller models offered by BREVE. The company offers systems of programmable controllers from the ARWE and ARH series, which work together with dedicated control units. The controllers can be operated by means of a 230V AC or 0-10V DC signal and they offer wide possibilities for setting the temperature (many operating programmes for each day of the week). As if that were not enough, a system of programmable controllers can consist of a great many controllers connected to a single control unit with a touch screen. A brilliant solution!
